5 Things You Should Teach Your Puppy

 

Your puppy needs all the guidance and support that he can get to ensure that he will grow up to be good and lovable dog. And since training should start the very moment that you decide to take him home to live with you and your family, it is important that you know the different things, lessons, traits and behaviors that you should teach your puppy. Sure you can teach him how to go chase balls, bark when someone is at the front door – but your pup was born with such skills, and the only thing you need to do is to enhance them. When training a puppy, you should think big and long term.

Things that Every Puppy Should Learn

There are so many things that you can teach your puppy, while most of them are tricks, there are also other very important things that your puppy should definitely learn:

• Respect – your puppy should learn to respect you as its owner and caretaker. This means that you should teach him not to nip, bite or tug your skin or clothes. Let him know that this is not the proper dog behavior. He should know that it’s bad to jump up or on human beings and even large pieces of furniture.
• Tolerance – since puppies do not like being held tightly or being confined to small spaces, be sure to train him to behave properly even when placed inside a dog cage or carrier. He should also learn to tolerate other dogs if you have more in the house. Tolerance also is needed when grooming your dogs – see, dogs may enjoy water a lot of times but they do not enjoy having their hair cut and nails trimmed.
• Stay Put – your puppy should stay put and avoid chasing other dogs, farm animals, and of course people. They should stay inside when told, or to stop running when commanded.
• Independence – if you cannot avoid leaving him behind, alone at home, or in the care of a friend or family member, you should make sure that he learns to relax, play, stay calm and behave while you are away.
• Anger Management – dogs have the tendency to be overprotective of the things that they hold dear and treat as their own. You should help your puppy learn not to be too protective of his food bowl, water dish, toys and of you.

Whether you decide to enroll him in one of the major dog training schools in your area or you would want to train your puppy all by yourself, be sure to let him learn these things and he is bound to be your best friend for a very long time.
